Tremble & Weep CD Spine

Most of these songs contain the thought that over the years, black and white country music have often met on the bridges of material poverty and spiritual redemption. I could not have done this work without the encouragement and support of many. Dedicated to my father, Hal, and my son, Peregrin.

Appaloosa AP 126-2 1996

  1. HIGH GROUND II 6:12 (Emsdale, Ontario - 1974. Revised 1994. Dedicated to the memory of Alden Knowlan)
  2. TREMBLE AND WEEP 3:21 (Thetis Island, 1995)
  3. THE WAY HATE WALKS 3:54 (Years ago, in Australia, I misheard a spoken reference to Eric Bogle's song, "I Hate Wogs"; I thought it was "The Way Hate Walks". I carried that phrase around until this August, when, while driving to the studio in Toronto, years of anxiety in our family over the war in Jugoslavia crystallized in these words. I recorded this new song with just two guitars, the day I wrote it.)
  4. realvideo TAMPA 5:29 (Thetis Island, 1994, after Milena brought me the antique photo-postcard depicted on the cover of this recording. The back of the card is dated 1911and the message pencilled in below the photo reads: "This was taken in Tampa. I work for the man that takes these." Dedicated to the Great Brothers of Country Music: the Delmores, the Louvins, the Monroes, and most of all, the Blue Sky Boys.)
  5. DAY PASS 4:11 (On the road, Fall, 1994. The Mustard Seed is a charity which feeds the homeless; Sally refers to The Salvation Army.)
  6. SECRETS 3:59 (Northern BC, Spring, 1993)
  7. KICK THE STONE 4:52 (Ontario, 1973. Reworked, 1993. In concert, 5,6,and 7 often appear together, connected with monologues.)
  8. MARY...TEXAS MIX WALTZ 6:11 (Thetis Island, 1993: about Death Row in Texas. The prelude/postlude is traditional: The Mary Queen of Scots March.
  9. BY THE SIDE OF THE ROAD 4:00
(An old gospel favourite. learned from the Seldom Scene.)
  10. realvideo THERE BUT FOR 3:53 (Thetis Island, 1994)
  11. GRACIE'S CANE 2:30 (1995. Dedicated to the memory of Grace Dickie, of Thetis Island, with a tip of the socket wrench to Sonny landreth.)

Sadly, the following lyrics have once more become as timely as they were, back in 1996, when David first penned them. We feel a need to share them, at this time, hoping that in some small way they will help...

On April 8, CBC Radio-One broadcast the song nationally on : "This Morning", as have numerous other radio stations across NA. "Amnesty International" have approached us regarding using it as part of their educatonal videos on Kosovo.

THE WAY HATE WAlKS Words & Music: David Essig 1996

"The way hate walks down an empty road with a shotgun in his hand
Is a picture we all know from a torn and a bleeding land
The way hate walks on the evening news and fakes a diplomatic pose
That's the way hate walks, the way hate talks, the way hate goes

There is blood in the village fountain and concrete in the air
Blue-hatted boys from Saskatoon counting bodies everywhere
And in New York and Geneva, they are playing it real slow
That's the way hate walks, the way hate talks, the way hate goes

There are tractors pulling wagons of hollow-eyed despair
A broken suitcase on the road full of rain-soaked underwear
Drunken farmboys taking orders - they'll be lining them up in rows
That's the way hate walks, the way hate talks, the way hate goes"

From the CD liner notes: " ... years of anxiety in our family over the war in Jugoslavia crystallized in these words." David Essig, 1996
